Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another through electronic communications to improve a patient’s clinical health status. With advances in technology, the use of telemedicine has expanded to include various applications and services using two-way video, email, smart phones and wireless diagnostic tools. Telemedicine technology allows a medical professional to examine a patient and be transmitted essential information, such as their vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate and temperature). They could listen remotely to the patient’s heart and lungs with a digital stethoscope and visually examine a patient with high resolution camera to see the patient’s ear drum, throat and skin miles away.
The company plans to provide standard telemedicine care for non-life- threatening situations in an area of schools. Services would include acute illness or injury care; dermatology examinations of rashes and lesions; diagnosis and recommendations as to treatment or referral; administering scheduled medications; prescribing non-narcotic medications through e-prescription directly to the student’s designated pharmacy; mental health counseling for depression, drug abuse, and family problems; and consulting with staff regarding eating disorders and other behavior issues.
