Environmental Power Corporation, through its subsidiary, Microgy, Inc., engages in the development, ownership, and operation of renewable energy production facilities in the United States.
The company develops renewable energy facilities for the production and commercial application of methane-rich biogas produced from animal, food industry, and other organic wastes. The biogas is sold to end-users or used to produce pipeline-grade methane, which is referred to as renewable natural gas (RNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed natural gas (CNG) renewable electrical energy or thermal energy, as well as other by-products. Its facilities also produce soil amendment products that can be used as a bedding, compost or peat moss, and liquid fertilizer that can be used for crop growth. The company licenses the anaerobic digestion portion of its technology from Danish Biogas Technology A/S.
The company owns and operates the Huckabay Ridge facility in Stephenville, Texas, which generates methane-rich biogas from manure and other agricultural waste, as well as distributes it through a commercial pipeline. Huckabay Ridge consists of eight 916,000-gallon digesters which operate together to process the manure from approximately 10,000 cows and produce 575,000 million British Thermal Units (MMBtus) of RNG annually. The company has two other multi-digester facilities in development in Texas. Its multi-digester facilities would primarily produce pipeline-quality renewable natural gas.
In addition, the company is operating three single digester facilities in Wisconsin. In January 2010, it contributed the rights to the net revenues of the Wisconsin facilities to HMI Energy, LLC, a joint venture between Microgy, Inc. and Homeland Renewable Energy, Inc. Microgy retains a 30% membership interest in the joint venture.
