Tata Agrico
TATA Agrico, a division of Tata Steel, manufactures agricultural implements in the country. Since 1925, it has been the major manufacturer of Shovels, Powrahs, Crowbars, Kudalies, Pickaxe and Hammers. These implements cater to the needs of Agricultural, Horticulture Industry, Maintenance of Roads, Dams, Railway- Tracks, Collieries, etc., in India and abroad. Automation division
The Automation Division of Tata Steel was created in 1990. It engages in the design, development, integration and implementation of Process Automation for the steel company and is also an international supplier of high level Automation for the metal industry. It is situated in the premises of steel company at Jamshedpur.
Tata Bearings
Tata Bearings division manufactures Deep Grove Ball Bearings, Double Row Self - Aligning Bearings, Magneto Bearings, Clutch Release Bearings, and Tapered Bearings. The plant is at Kharagpur, 120 km from Kolkata, India.
Ferro Alloys & Minerals Division
Ferro Alloys & Minerals Division (FA&MD), a profit centre of Tata Steel, was founded in 1993 with an objective of focusing its business objectives on a long-term basis in the area of Ferro Alloys and Minerals. Chrome and Manganese form the mainstay of FA&MD. Apart from this, Iron Ore, Manganese Ore, Coal, Coke & other ferro alloys are also produced or sourced through various business partners in order to provide a package to its customers. The division also provides Port Management Services to various Indian Industries and takes care of procurement of Ferro Alloys and Metals for Jamshedpur Works.

Flat products business group at Tata Steel is a major manufacturer of steel products. With a capacity of 2.5 million MT of Hot Rolled, Cold rolled & Coated Products, Flat Products business group produces approximately 65% of total saleable steel.
Tisco Growth Shop
Tata Steel’s Growth Shop (TGS), set up in 1968, operates in the field of heavy engineering plant and equipment manufacture in India. TGS engages in the design, development, manufacture, erection and commissioning of thousands of tons of equipment both in-house for Tata Steel and for the following industries worldwide, including Steel; Aluminium; Power & Energy; Oil & Natural Gas; Pollution Control Devices; Material Handling; Nuclear Sector; and Space Research/Defense Sector.
Steel industry products:
TGS manufactures a range of heavy engineering equipment for Steel Plants, starting from raw material systems onwards, Covering Bedding & Blending, Coke Ovens, Sinter Plants, Blast Furnaces, LD, Billet / Slab Casters, Hot Strip Mills, Cold Rolling Mills, EOT Cranes, Gear Boxes etc.
Coil Tilter: The Growth Shop has designed, manufactured and supplied a host of equipment, such as Ladles, Ladle Tilters, Steel Transfer Cars, Ladle Turrets, Torpedo Ladle Cars, Combined Steel and Slag Transfer Cars, Coil tilters, Walking Beam Conveyors, Slag Raking Machines, Rotating Slab Transfer Trolleys, etc.
Aluminium industry: TGS supplies equipment for the Aluminium industry, such as Roughing and Finishing Mills, Belt Wrappers, etc., for Hot and Cold Rolling Mills. The Shop also manufactures products like Chocks, Scoops, Crust Breakers, Collector Bars, Slab Caster Rolls etc., for its customers in the Aluminium industry, such as Hindalco, NALCO, INDAL and Sterlite Industries.
Power & Energy: The Power Sector, both Thermal and Hydel, and the Energy Sector form the main area for the Growth Shop. In this field, TGS has manufactured and supplied Hydro-mechanical equipment, such as Radial Gates, Flap Gates, Sluice Gates, Draft Tube Gates, Penstocks, etc.
Grinding Roll: The Shop has also manufactured a variety of Liners for Coal Crushers, as well as Dewatering Centrifuges for Coal Washing Plants. In the Oil and Natural Gas Sector, TGS has specialized in the manufacture of Crude Columns for refineries, such as the ONGS Tatipaka Refinery, and Large Size Pressure Vessels for IOCL Gujarat.
Pollution Control Devices: TGS manufactures Electrostatic Precipitators and their components, such as Collecting Electrodes, Discharge electrodes, ESP Casing, Hoppers, etc for supply to customers in accordance with designs supplied by both ACC, as well as Alstom. The Pollution Control equipment for Tata steel’s Coke Oven machines were supplied by the Growth Shop. TGS has also manufactured, erected and commissioned the Primary cum Deep Cooler for the Coke Oven Gas Processing and Cleaning System at the Coke Oven Battery.
Material Handling industry: TGS engages in the design and manufacture of Cranes for various classes of duty and application ranging in capacities form 1 ton to 225 tons. The Growth Shop has manufactured approximately 350 cranes for application in a gamut of industries covering Steel, Cement, Power, Aluminium, Hydel, etc. The range includes EOT Cranes, Semi Portal Cranes, Gantry Cranes, etc.
Space Research: TGS manufactures and supplied the Mobile Launch Pad of overall size 19.2m x 19.2m x 8m and weighting 750 tons for the second launch pad of the Indian Space Research Organization.
Raw Material Division
Mines: Tata Steel has two collieries in West Bokaro and Jharia in the state of Jharkhand. While West Bokaro unit is an open cast mine, the Jharia unit is underground. The coal mines are about 150 kms from the steel plant at Jamshedpur and produce superior grades of clean coal. The iron ore units are located in Noamundi, Joda and Katamandi in the states of Jharkhand and Orissa. Tata Steel also has a manganese mines and dolomite quarries in Orissa. These mines are located at an approximate distance of 150 KMS from Jamshedpur, home to the steel company's manufacturing facility. The Steel Company's iron ore units produce 9 million tonnes per annum of various grades of iron ore, including rich blue dust ore. The mineral ore is crushed, right-sized and washed in-house at the site and transported to the steel works in Jamshedpur and to other customers. The mines division also provides technical services to Bhutan Dolomite Mine in the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan.
Mining Products: The raw materials division of the company raises over 14 million tonnes of ores from its captive collieries, iron ore mines and quarries spread over the states of Jharkhand and Orissa. Coal, iron ore, manganese ore, chrome and dolomite are produced at various mines and quarries. The Company's steel plant in Jamshedpur and its customers consume the high-grade raw materials from these units.
Long Products division
Long product division of Tata Steel provides value-added finished product that comprises Special Bar Quality, Wire rods, merchant bars and semis in the form of c.c. billets.
Rings & Agrico division
Rings & Agrico Division is a Profit Center of The Tata Iron & Steel Company Limited, formed in October 1993. The division manufactures forged and rolled rings and automotive components. It comprises Ring Plant, Ring Rolling Mill and Agrico. Ring Plant was founded in October 1984 and is located inside TISCO WORKS, having two manufacturing lines - Hatebur a closed die high speed hot forming line and Banning (Radial Axial Ring Rolling Mill), a closed die hot forming-cum-rolling line. Ring Rolling Mill at Adityapur complex, founded in January 1971, has a Wagner Machine - closed die hot forming-cum-radial rolling line with calibrating facility.
Products offered:
The division produces ring and annual products at Ring Plant and Ring Rolling Mill for Ball Bearings, Taper Roller Bearings Cylindrical Roller Bearings, Spherical Roller Bearings and Auto-Components. The major share of production of Ring Plant and Ring Rolling Mill is bearing races. The division has maintained only a selective presence in the Auto component market. Some of the main products are: Rings for Cylindrical, Taper Roller and Ball Bearings; Gear Blanks; Crown Wheel; Universal Joint; Shifter Sleeve; and Helical Gear.
Customers:
Some of the key customers of the Rings Division are SKF; TIL; FAG; NEI; Tata Bearings and TELCO. The company’s products are supplied to Original Equipment manufacturers. It can also supply Machined and MPI tested Rings and ISO thermal annealed Rings.
Secondary Products Division
Secondary Products is a Profit Center of TATA STEEL. It engages in the sale of secondary products that include Rerolling Scrap; Non-Ferrous Scrap; Tubes Scrap; HR/CR Scrap; By-Products from Collieries; Coke Fractions; Lime Fractions; Granulated Slag; Coal Tar; and other Miscellaneous Products.
Tata Tubes - Strategic Business Unit:
Tata Steel - Tubes SBU is a domestic manufacturer of steel tubes. The SBU promotes three lines of businesses: The Standard Tubes Business; The Precision Tubes Business; and The Closed Structurals Business.
Significant Events
The company has entered into a joint venture (JV) with Al Bahja group of Oman to explore and develop Uyun limestone deposits in Oman. TS is to hold 70% stake in the JV to be named Al Rimal Minerals.
Tata Steel Limited and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has entered into a joint venture agreement for Setting up a shipping company to cater to dry bulk and break bulk cargo. The Company and NYK would each hold 50% stake in the joint venture company.
Tata Steel Limited has entered into a Joint Venture agreement with Tata Power Co., Ltd. to set up captive power plants (CPP) in Chattisgarh, Orissa and Jharkhand. Tata Power would set up a 120 MW CPP in Jamshedpur, utilizing the waste gases from the steel making process.
In November 2007, Tata Steel Limited and Riversdale Mining, Ltd. have signed an agreement to establish a special purpose joint venture vehicle to develop a hard coking and thermal coal project at key coal exploration tenements held by Riversdale in Mozambique. The Joint Venture consists of two licences (the Benga and Tete licences) and covers an area of 24,960 hectares (approximately 96.7 square miles). Riversdale Mining holds a total acreage of approximately 290,000 hectares (1,120 square miles) in Mozambique. The coking coal derived from this project would be supplied to the Tata Steel Group's facilities primarily in Europe and Asia.
In January 2008, Steel Authority of India, Ltd. has signed a Joint Venture Agreement with Tata Steel Limited for incorporation of a joint venture coal mining Company in the State of Jharkhand. Both the Company and Tata Steel would hold 50% in the joint venture Company. The Joint Venture Company would initially be mining 4 nos. of identified coal blocks in India.
The company has entered into a joint venture agreement with Al Bahja Group for the development of limestone deposits in Oman. Tata Steel would hold 70% stake in Al Rimal Mining LLC, which would execute the project of developing and operating the Uyun mine. Tata Steel would hold the stake in the Oman-based firm through its subsidiary TS Global Minerals Holdings Pte, Ltd.
The company has signed an agreement with Societe d'Etat pour le Developpement Minier de la Cote d'Ivoire Mines for the development of Mount Nimba Iron ore deposits in Ivory Coast, West Africa. The Mount Nimba deposit is spread over three countries - Liberia, Guinea and Ivory Coast.
The company has signed a joint venture agreement with Sodemi for developing Mount Nimba iron ore deposits. The ore deposits are spread across Ivory Coast, Liberia and Guinea.
Steel Authority of India, Ltd. (SAIL) has entered into a joint venture (JV) with Tata Steel Limited for coal mining. SAIL plans to source coking coal for its capacity expansion. It also intends to enter into joint ventures with domestic and global partners for coking coal mines.
On May 11, 2009, Mozambique has a mining contract to Tata Steel Limited and its JV partner Riversdale Mining Ltd. for the Benga coal project in the African country, which would yield approximately 20 million tonnes of the dry fuel every 200. Tata Steel, has a 35% stake in the project besides a secured right for 40% of the produce to feed its Corus facilities in the United Kingdom and Europe.
On October 22, 2009, Tata Steel Limited and MMTC Ltd. signed an agreement to establish a 74:26 joint venture company for acquiring, development and operation of mines and processing of minerals and metals.
History
Tata Steel Limited was established by Mr. Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in 1907. It was formerly known as The Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited and changed its name to Tata Steel Limited in 2005.
